General Motors CEO Mary Barra announced at an Automotive Press Association event in Detroit that the next generation Chevrolet Bolt EV will debut sometime in 2025.

The current generation Chevrolet Bolt went on sale in 2016 and has carved out a unique niche as a low-cost, high-utility EV runabout, with Chevrolet selling an impressive 49,492 so far this year (October, November, and December sales are not included in this number).

The current 2023 Chevrolet Bolt starts at $27,495 (including destination fee), with the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV starting at a similarly competitive $28,795 (also including destination fee), making them both some of the least expensive EVs currently sold in the US market. It is not known if the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt will continue to be offered in both hatchback and crossover styles. However, with buying habits trending toward the latter, we wouldn’t be surprised to see this next-generation Chevrolet Bolt turn out to be a compact crossover.

With the all-new Ultium-based 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV arriving early next year sporting a $34,995 price tag, this next-generation Chevrolet Bolt is expected to be the most affordable member of the Chevrolet EV family, closely following its current price point. Chevrolet has become somewhat of an expert in making excellent, inexpensive cars, as witnessed by the new 2024 Chevrolet Trax, which has garnered glowing reviews for its refinement, feature content, styling, and impressively low price. The next-generation Chevrolet Bolt would do well to build upon this newly established company trend.

While technical specifications are scarce, the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt is expected to utilize GM’s Ultium battery technology and lithium-iron-phosphate cells to reduce manufacturing costs further. GM has also announced that the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt will be updated to the company’s Ultifi software platform, allowing for shorter development times and better integration, including over-the-air updates.

We expect to hear more about the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt in the near future.
